Pub Quiz Miami: Planning a Wednesday Trivia Night Out

Free Wednesday trivia at 8 PM in Edgewater. Who to bring, when to show up, what to order and how to turn a pub quiz into a whole night out at The Leinster.

If you're searching for a pub quiz in Miami, you probably don't want a list of forty bars and a shrug. You want to know where to go on a weeknight, what the night actually looks like, and if your group of friends will actually have a good time or spend two hours squinting at a sheet of paper. At The Leinster, the Irish pub at 1600 NE 1st Ave in Edgewater, the answer is Wednesday. Every Wednesday at 8 PM we host the Jeopardy Bar League, it's free to play, teams go up to six, and there's no cover and no reservation to make. This is the planning side of it: who to bring, when to show up, what to order and how to make a whole evening out of it.

A pub quiz in Miami, the Wednesday version

The classic pub quiz is a host, a microphone, a stack of answer sheets and a pencil that nobody can find. Ours keeps the good parts (the host, the rivalry between tables, the groan when a team two tables over gets the one you knew) and swaps the paper for your phone. The Jeopardy Bar League runs on a free app, your phone is the team's buzzer, the categories go up on the big screen and scoring takes care of itself. Three rounds, roughly two hours, and your score feeds a nationwide leaderboard, so a strong Wednesday counts for more than bragging rights at the bar.

We've already written up how Jeopardy Night works round by round, so we won't repeat the rules here. What people ask us more often is the practical stuff, the kind of thing that decides if your group actually makes it out on a Wednesday.

Building your Wednesday trivia team

Six is the cap, and six is a good number, but you don't need a full squad. Pairs and small groups play all the time, and if you come on your own you can jump in when you get here. The trick with a pub quiz team is range. Think about who in your group chat knows things nobody else does. The one who never misses a match on our screens. The one who watched every awards show. The history nerd, the music obsessive, the friend who reads Wikipedia at 2 AM for fun. A mix like that covers more of the board than six people who all know the same stuff.

Coworkers make great teams too. A Wednesday quiz is a much easier sell to the office than another round of drinks with nothing to do, and it gets people talking who don't normally sit together. If your crew is bigger than six, split into two teams and let the rivalry do the rest. That's usually where the best nights come from.

Two small bits of homework before you leave the house. Download the app so nobody is fumbling with it at 7:58, and pick a team name. You'll be staring at it on a leaderboard for two hours, so make it one you can live with.

How to plan the night, from happy hour to last call

The best Wednesday trivia nights in Miami don't start at 8. Here's how a relaxed one tends to go at The Leinster.

Start at happy hour. Happy hour runs Monday to Friday, 3 to 7 PM, with 25% off everything, a Guinness for $5 before 5 PM and The Leinster Lager for $5. If you can slip out of work a bit early, that's the smart way in. The full details are on our happy hour page.

Get a table before 8. There's no reservation for Jeopardy Night, it's walk-in, so arriving a little early is how you get a good spot, especially with a bigger group. Coming from Midtown, Wynwood, Downtown or Brickell, it's a short hop, there's street parking nearby, Metromover stations are within walking distance, and rideshare drops you right at the door.

Order before the first category drops. Wednesday's food special is the Spice Bag for $13, down from $16 the rest of the week. It's The Famous Irish Spice Bag: Chinese spiced fries, peppers, onions, chicken and Irish curry sauce, and it's built for sharing across a table of people who are only half paying attention to their food. Wings are another easy table order (6 wings $14, 12 wings $24), and the Sausage Rolls and the Bavarian Pretzel travel well between rounds too. Everything else is on the menu.

Pace the pints. Our Guinness is poured over the full 119.5 seconds, and a Guinness 20 oz is $10.50 once happy hour is over. There's also the Split the G challenge if your team needs a between-rounds side quest. Final Jeopardy is all about the wager, and it's a lot easier to do the math on a clear head.

Don't rush off. We're open until 1 AM Monday to Thursday and the kitchen serves late, so there's no need to scatter the second the scores go final. On Monday to Thursday, happy hour comes round again from 11 PM until close. Ask at the bar for what's on.

More than a quiz on a Wednesday

Part of why a pub quiz works better in a proper pub is that the rest of the room is still a pub. The screens are on, the regulars are at the bar, and midweek there's often a game worth keeping an eye on between clues. Check our sports page for what we show, from the Champions League to the NFL.

And if Wednesday becomes a habit, the rest of the week has its own reasons to come back. Monday is $1.50 wings, Tuesday is Taco Tuesday, Thursday is karaoke or live music with a $13 Smashed Burger, and Friday is Fish and Chips for $18. Plenty of trivia teams end up treating The Leinster as their local, which is really the whole point of a neighborhood pub.
