Trivia Bar in Edgewater: Taking the Office to Quiz Night

Got volunteered to plan the team night out? Here's how to turn free Wednesday trivia at The Leinster in Edgewater into an office outing people actually enjoy.

If you're hunting for a trivia bar in Edgewater for the whole office, the short answer is The Leinster on a Wednesday. Every Wednesday at 8 PM we run the Jeopardy Bar League at 1600 NE 1st Ave. It's free to play, teams go up to six, and it's walk-in only, so nobody has to chase a booking or collect money from the group chat. This post is for the person who got volunteered to plan the team night out, and wants it to go better than another round of drinks where everyone talks to the same three people.

Why a trivia bar in Edgewater works for a team night out

A work happy hour with nothing to do tends to split into little islands. Trivia fixes that, because it hands everyone a shared job for a couple of hours. The quiet analyst who knows every capital in Africa suddenly matters. So does the new hire who watched every awards show this year. People who never sit together end up arguing over a Daily Double wager, which is about the best team building you'll get for the price of a pint.

The format helps too. The Jeopardy Bar League is the bar version of the TV quiz, played over three rounds in roughly two hours. Your phone is the team's buzzer, the board goes up on the big screens and the scoring takes care of itself, so nobody gets stuck as scorekeeper. Scores feed nationwide leaderboards, which gives a competitive office something to brag about on Thursday morning. If you want the round-by-round rules first, our Jeopardy Night page lays it all out.

And it's a pub, not a trivia hall. The screens are on, the regulars are at the bar, and the colleagues who'd rather not play can grab a stool, watch whatever's on (our sports page has what we show) and still feel part of the night.

Splitting the office into trivia teams

Six is the cap per team, so a bigger group simply becomes two or three teams. That's where it gets fun. A sales-versus-engineering rivalry, or a straight draw out of a hat, will get more people invested than one giant table ever could. A few things that tend to work:

  • Mix departments on purpose. Range beats depth in bar trivia. A team with a sports fan, a history nerd, a music obsessive and someone who reads the news every morning covers far more of the board than six people from the same desk.
  • Get the app sorted before you leave the office. One phone runs each team. Ask each captain to download it at their desk so nobody is fumbling at 7:58.
  • Pick team names early. They end up on the leaderboard for the whole night, so let people have their fun with it in the group chat that afternoon.
  • Turn up a little before 8. It's walk-in, and the best way to keep a big group together is to arrive early and settle in before the first category drops.

Start with the corporate happy hour, finish with Final Jeopardy

The easiest way to sell a midweek outing is to make it start straight after work. Happy hour runs Monday to Friday, 3 to 7 PM, with 25% off everything, a Guinness for $5 before 5 PM and The Leinster Lager for $5. Michelob Ultra is $5 all day. If the team can slip out a bit early, that's a relaxed couple of hours before trivia even starts. Full details are on our happy hour page.

Food matters with a work crowd, because nobody plays well hungry. Wednesday's special is The Famous Irish Spice Bag for $13: Chinese spiced fries, peppers, onions, chicken and Irish curry sauce, and it's made for passing around a table. Wings come as 6 wings $14 or 12 wings $24, and the Sausage Rolls ($16), Clarke's Spring Rolls ($15) and the Bavarian Pretzel ($12) are good shareables that won't distract anyone from the board. The rest is on the menu.

A word on pints. Our Guinness gets the full 119.5-second pour, and a Guinness 20 oz is $10.50 after happy hour. Final Jeopardy is all about the wager, and a team that has paced itself will do the math better than one that hasn't. There's no rush once the scores go final either, since we're open until 1 AM Monday to Thursday and the kitchen serves late.

When the group is too big for a few tables

Trivia night is perfect for a team or a department. If you're planning something larger, like a company-wide corporate happy hour or a client mixer, that's a job for our private events side. The main room holds 150 standing or 65 seated, the covered patio adds another 50, and a full buyout goes up to 200 guests. There are 10 AV monitors for slides or a quick speech, all-inclusive beverage packages from $38 per person, and hors d'oeuvres packages from $39 per person with a 15-guest minimum. Cocktail receptions are the specialty there, which suits a work crowd that would rather mingle than sit through a long dinner.

For most teams, though, the simple version wins: leave the office, catch the end of happy hour, split into teams and play. It costs nothing to enter, and it's the kind of night people actually talk about the next morning.
